Question Summary
Can I take a train from Barcelona to Santander? If not, is the only other reasonable time option to fly? Not in Spain long enough to drive or take a bus.

Background Info
Traveling with my adult kids (21 and 24 yrs old) after the younger one finishes his semester abroad in Barcelona (mid April 2011). We plan to spend 3 days in Barcelona, 3 days in Budapest and are looking for another city to spend 3 days in that's convenient to get to. We have 12-14 days to travel/transport from New York City. (Have already been to Paris, Barcelona and Madrid. Looking to go to a different city.)
Advice
- Have no idea about hotels yet and am open to suggestions. Thank you! Ricki
Damian Corrigan, Spain Travel Guide, says:
Hi Ricki! There are no direct trains or flights to Santander - you have to change in Madrid. The bus is your only option, I'm afraid.
You can see your travel options here: Barcelona to Santander.
Your choice of destinations are interesting. Budapest is a nice place but a very long way away from Spain! And Santander doesn't have a great deal going for it. Check out my list of Best Cities in Spain for other travel inspiration.
If you really want to visit Santander, consider a stop in Bilbao and/or San Sebastian, both of which have trains from Barcelona.
A good site for booking hotels is this one: Book Hotels in Santander (book direct). They have customer reviews, maps and a simple booking process (including no reservation).
