Zaragoza is not the most famous city in Spain and is rarely people's first choice for flights to Spain, but its Moorish heritage (virtually unique in northern Spain) and its ideal location half way between Madrid and Barcelona make it a good starting point for a vacation in these two cities. Where is Zaragoza?

Half way between Madrid and Barcelona, Zaragoza is the capital of the Aragon province.

What to Do in Zaragoza

The Aljafería Moorish castle is the most important artefact of Islamic rule in Spain outside of Andalusia. There are also some interesting Roman city walls.

Agreda Automovil runs the bus transfer from Zaragoza airport to Zaragoza, with arrivals and departures coinciding with the Ryanair flights.

From Zaragoza to Other Destinations in Spain

  • From Zaragoza to Madrid There is an express (AVE) train from Zaragoza to Madrid which takes one-and-a-half hours and costs 40€. By bus, the journey takes nearly four hours but costs only 13€. The bus service is run by ALSA.
  • From Zaragoza to Barcelona There is a direct train to Barcelona which takes three hours and costs under 40€. The bus costs 13€ and takes four hours, making it a better option (see ALSA for more details).
  • From Zaragoza to Pamplona Train times from Zaragoza to Pamplona can vary but can take one hour and forty-five minutes, which makes it a good arrival point for visiting the Pamplona Bull Run at the San Fermin Festival, though Vitoria airport is closer.
  • From Zaragoza to Bilbao There are two trains a day from Zaragoza to Bilbao, costing 25-35€. The bus, which is more frequent, costs 18€ and takes four hours.
