Flights to Santiago de Compostela Airport
Budget Flights to Spain: Santiago de Compostela Airport

By , About.com Guide

In addition to Ryanair, Santiago de Compostela airport is served by a number of airlines (Iberia, Spanair, Air Europa, British Airways, Air France and Air Berlin). Out of all of Ryanair's destinations in the north of Spain, Santiago is the most interesting after Madrid (Barcelona doesn't count as Ryanair doesn't actually fly into Barcelona itself).

Where is Santiago de Compostela?

In the far north-west of Spain, directly north of Portugal.

What to Do in Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is the end of the Camino de Santiago, an ancient pilgrimage now popular with backpackers. It is said to be the birthplace of Saint James, and his tomb is under the cathedral. The Galician countryside is famous for being among the greenest and most beautiful in Spain.

Private Transfer from Santiago de Compostela Airport to Your Hotel

Though there is a bus (see below), the bus station is out of the city center so you'd probably end up taking a taxi from the bus station to your hotel anyway. There are taxis from the airport, but this transfer is cheaper. It is also available twenty-four hours a day, which is handy for if you are arriving late at night.

Private Transfer from Your Hotel to Santiago de Compostela Airport

Again, there is a bus, but the bus station is out of the city center, so a private transfer (which is cheaper than a taxi) is a good idea.

Public Transport from Santiago de Compostela Airport

There is a regular bus from Santiago Airport to Santiago bus station (see regularly updated bus timetable), but the bus station is quite a way from the center. A taxi would cost about 15€.

How to Get from Santiago de Compostela to Other Destinations in Spain

There are regular trains from Santiago de Compostela to A Coruña and Ourense and one train a day to León, but Asturias is not well served (there are no direct trains to Oviedo or Gijon). Travel any further into central Spain is inpractical from Santiago - if you are heading towards Madrid, fly to Valladolid Airport or to Madrid Airport itself.
