How to Get to Spain
Transportation in Spain: How to Get to Spain by Train, Plane, Bus, Ferry and Car

By , About.com Guide

Though most people fly to Spain, you can also get to the peninsula by train, bus, ferry or car - some even hitchhike! On this page you can find information on cars, trains, buses, ferries and flights to Spain, with details of how to book your transportation to Spain.

For specific information about coming from France into Spain, read How to Get from France to Spain or read on for more general information.

Flights to Spain

Spain is well served by cheap flights from all over Europe, the Americas and Asia. The budget airline market is the most developed, with flights as cheap as 10€ from the UK, Ireland, Germany and Italy in particular. Flights to Spain from outside of Europe only arrive in Madrid and Barcelona (with one or two in Malaga).

Trains to Spain

You can come into Spain by train from Portugal or France, though there are also direct trains (that come through France) from Switzerland and Italy.

Rail Passes for Travel in Spain

Eurail have a number of rail passes aimed at people traveling by train in Spain. Some cater for people just traveling in Spain, others for pairs of countries and some for Europe-wide travel.

Driving to Spain

Driving can be a convenient way to get to Spain and it can save you money, but it isn't always the easiest or cheapest. Check out these links to help you decide if you want to travel to Spain by car: You might be better off combining some days of renting a car with some train travel, in which case you should look into a Eurail pass which combines the two.

Buses to Spain

Buses to Spain with Eurolines is another way to travel to Spain. Unfortunately, the Eurolines website is awful and you need to be able to read French to book from the French site and Portuguese to book from the Portuguese site. An alternative is Busabout, a hop-on-hop-off bus service with services all over Europe.

Ferries to Spain

It is possible to travel by ferry to Spain from the UK, Italy, Algeria, Morocco, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.

Hitchhiking to Spain

Hitchhiking to Spain (through France) is easy, but hitchhiking in Spain is very difficult. Read more on Hitchhiking in Spain.
