What is the Noche en Blanco in Madrid?
Noche en Blanco, or White Night in English, is an all-night cultural extravaganza which takes place on one night each September (in 2007 it will take place on the night of September 22). Everything is free of charge and the city puts on 24 hour public transport to make getting between events easier.Begun in Paris as 'Nuit Blanche' in 2002, the even has since spread to numerous European cities, as well as Sao Paolo, Toronto, Montreal and Chicago and is known as Light Night in Leeds. It is based on a similar German event, known as Long Night of Museums (or, more precisely, Lange Nacht der Museen).
Noche en Blanco in Madrid - 2007 Program
There are dozens of events throughout the city, with the majority of museums having free entry throughout the night. The events below are a selection of the biggest events of the 2007 Noche en Blanco in Madrid.- A 'concert of silences' called 'Symphony of Sirens in the Retiro park at 8.15pm.
- Open Air Daft Punk concert at Matadero de Madrid, Legazpi, at 6am!
- Melbourne-based Strange Fruits perform at the Santiago Bernabeu at 9pm and 12am.
- Macanique Vivante perform at Plaza de Colon from 9pm until 11.45pm.
- Avant-Garde singer Fátima Miranda performs at the Templo de Debod.
- South African film maker and artist William Kentridge will perform 'Journey to the moon and 9 drawings for projection' at Centro Conde Duque from 9pm to 7am (with the main performance at 10.30pm).
- British artist Ron Haselden "makes sculptures with art and transforms everyday objects into works of art", according to the Noche en Blanco website. You can see if you agree with their assessment from midnight until 5am at Edificio España, in Plaza España.
