Is it Ibiza or Eivissa?

By Damian Corrigan, About.com

Question: Is it Ibiza or Eivissa?

What is the correct spelling - Ibiza or Eivissa? And how should it be pronounced?

Answer:

Both spellings are correct:
  • Ibiza is Spanish and English. In Spanish it should be pronounced 'Ee-bee-tha'. In English it can be pronounced 'Ee-bee-tha' but 'Eye-bee-tha' is acceptable too. Under no circumstances should it be pronounced as if it rhymes with 'eat pizza' (unless you are in the 90s pop group the Vengaboys).
  • Eivissa is Catalan. It is pronounced 'Ee-bee-sa'. It is incorrect in English - most people won't know what you're talking about.
