March Festivals in Spain - the Best of Spanish Festivals in March

By Damian Corrigan, About.com

Best Region: Valencia
Exact Dates:: The week leading up to the 19th.
Why? : March sees the first truly important festival of the year - Las Fallas, which runs from March 12 until March 19. Valencian families make paper mache dolls - sometimes in the shape of traditional figures, sometimes in the shape of famous people like Shrek or George W. Bush. The creations are paraded before being burtn in one of the many bonfires. This takes place amid much partying! You haven’t seen bonfires until you’ve seen the ones the Valencians light on the last night of Las Fallas.
Other Festivities in March:

  • Throughout month - Jerez Flamenco Festival

  • March 1 - festival in San Rosendo Monastery in Celanova, Galicia.

  • March 19 - the Fallas festival is quite infectious - Xàtiva, Benidorm and Denia also have mini-fallas festivities. There is also a live classical music festival in Ibiza for Festa de Sant Josep.

  • March 23 - 30 - Mostra de Cinema Llatinoamericà de Lleida, Latin American film festival in Lleida in Catalonia.

  • Third Sunday of Lent - Fiesta de la Magdalena in Castellon de la Plana, Valencia, a celebration of the end of Moorish rule.
