Best Spanish Festivals in June

By Damian Corrigan, About.com

Best Region:
Barcelona
Exact Dates:
Throughout the month
Why?:
While Madrid and Andalusia are sweating in the intense summer heat, Barcelona’s coastal location makes it the perfect location for a vacation. Add to that the Grec Performance Arts Festival, the Sonar Festival of Advanced Music & Art, the Festa de la Musica and the Marato festival. Plenty to keep you amused.
Things to Consider:
There is so much going on this month, you want to be careful about spending the whole time up in Catalonia - you can't do day trips to Andalusia! Have a look at the various festivals in June and choose which ones you want to see and then move on.
Other Festivities in June:

  • June 12 Romeria del Rocio, Huelva

  • June 20-24San Juan, a celebration of the longest day of the year. Popular throughout Spain but particularly in Lalín in Galicia, Palamós and Roses in Girona, Alicante and Gran Canaria.

  • Third week of the month - Algeciras fair.

  • Third week of the month - Cinema Jove International Film Festival in Valencia.

  • June 22-24 - the Santander Summer Festival a pop festival featuring big name stars.

  • June 23-7 - They say that less is more and, indeed, when the town of Coria (near Caceres, Extremadura) lets loose a single bull (as opposed to the usual dozens released during the bull runs) the town's inhabitants enjoy a fun few days as they drink and dance in the streets, until that bull rears his ugly head...

  • Last Saturday in June - 'Potaje', famous flamenco festival, Utrera, Seville.

  • June 24 - Lanjarón, in the Alpujarras region near Granada has its Water Festival (Fiesta del Agua) (presumably to publicise its mineral water production), as well as a celebration of the town's delicious ham. The water festival is just an excuse for a giant water fight. The locals park their cars out of town for day as people from all over the country take to the streets with buckets and water pistols. They then feast on locally produced ham, some of the best in the country. A novel event that is worth a visit.

  • June 29 - Batalla del Vino in Horo, La Rioja, a 'wine battle' much like the Tomatina Tomato Fight, only with locally produced wine!

  • Late June/early July - Granada's International Festival of Music and Dance, a celebration of flamenco and classical music that attracts some excellent musicians.
