1. Eat Free Tapas in Granada

Granada still serves its tapas like they were supposed to be served - free of charge, one for each drink you buy. And it tastes delicious.

2. Visit the Alhambra

The Alhambra was one of the candidates for the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is a grand Moorish fortress, with beautiful gardens and spectactular architect.

With limited tickets issued each day, be prepared to stand in line for a long time. Alternatively, book an Alhambra tour, combining the tour with a tour of the city or a visit to the city's Hammam (see below).

3. Visit the Hammam

Soothe away the aches and pains of spending half a day at the Alhambra (see above) by having a soak at the Granada Hammam. You can book the two together: Alhambra Tour and Hammam Visit.

4. Drink Tea and Smoke Shisha at a Morocco Tea Shop

Don't worry, shisha isn't illegal: some call it hookah, others call it nargila. It's the water pipe used for smoking flavored tobacco. Granada is full of Moroccan tea shops where you can drink over 50 types of tea and smoke shisha.

5. Explore the Albayzín and Sacromonte

The Albayzín (or Albaicín) is Granada's Moorish district, full of winding streets and steep gradients. Overlooking the Alhambra, Sacromonte is Granada's gypsy quarter and is famous for its flamenco venues. These two areas of Granada couldn't be more different and are the most beautiful places to get lost in.

6. Visit the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada

The Alpujarras are the green mountains between Granada and the sea. Tiny villages dot the landscape, with the locals making their living off ham and wine production.

Read more on the Alpujarras.

Public transport in this area is dreadful. If you want to explore the Alpujarras, your best bet is to hire a car or take a Guided Tour of the Alpujarras.

Alternatively, there's the mountains that overlook Granada - snow capped for most of the year - which make up the Sierra Nevada. Hire a car and go exploring or take a Guided Tour of the Sierra Nevada.

You can even go Skiing in Sierra Nevada

7. Visit Seville

You'd be better off spending a few days in Seville, but if you can't fit that into your schedule, a day trip will suffice. Read more about Seville in this Seville Guide or book a Guided Tour of Seville from Granada to make sure you get the most out of your day.

8. Visit Cordoba

Cordoba is a little closer to Granada than Seville and is perfect to do in a day. It has a very pleasant old town which gives the illusion that the city is smaller than it is. The main attraction is the Mezquita: now a Catholic church, it was once the biggest mosque in the world.

You can do a Guided Tour of Cordoba that will take you from Granada and return you there at the end of the day.

9. Visit the Caves of Nerja

Go into the caves of Nerja - with a 32-meter central column - and visit other sights on the south coast of Spain, including Salobrena Castle and El Majuelo Park.

It would be difficult to visit all of these in one day - so you might want to consider a Guided Tour of Nerja and Coast.

10. Visit Antequera

Ancient Dolmens, bizarre rocks formations and a lovely town puts Antequera high on the must-see list.
