Ryanair flights can be cheap - but are they any good?

This is a full review of the service provided by Ryanair. Some aspects of Ryanair's service are similar on any budget airline, but many are unique to Ryanair.

Ryanair's Destinations in Spain

Ryanair flies to 16 destinations in mainland Spain, as well as two destinations in the Canary Islands, one in the Balearics and two in Portugal, making Ryanair one of the best airlines in terms of number of destinations in Spain.

They are: Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Almeria, Granada, Seville, Jerez, Malaga, Santiago de Compostela, Valladolid, Santander, Vitoria, Zaragoza, Barcelona (Reus), Barcelona (Girona), Palma Mallorca, Tenerife North, Tenerife South and Fuerteventura.

However, the way Ryanair advertises some of their destinations can be confusing for those not familiar with the geography of Spain. Ryanair describes its flights to Reus and Girona as 'Barcelona (Reus)' and 'Barcelona (Girona)' respectively, despite these airports being 100km from Barcelona.

According to a report on the BBC in August 2007, Ryanair got in trouble for being 'misleading in their claims' in an advertisement about costs and travel times for travel between London and Brussels as they 'hadn't flagged up' the distance between the airports and the city centers and the costs incurred traveling between the two. Watch this BBC video on Ryanair complaints upheld.

Ryanair's Prices

Ryanair's advertised prices start from 1¢. Even with the many taxes and charges that Ryanair add, you can get a flight for 15€.

Ryanair have come a long way recently in improving the transparency of their prices. Now special offers on their homepage include taxes and charges and they no longer boast about 'free' flights (where you still page taxes and charges). Unfortunately, when buying tickets, the prices still don't include the extra charges.

In addition to your basic flight price you must pay the following fees and charges:

  • Airport Taxes
  • Insurance (mandatory insurance that covers Ryanair's own insurance costs and is NOT a personal travel insurance policy for your own belongings).*
  • Fee for each item of checked luggage.
  • Credit/debit card handling fee (see below).
  • A fee for taking sports equipment or musical instruments onto the plane.

These are just the fees you pay when you book your ticket. In this list of Ryanair Fees, six of the ten fees are charged to you at the airport (and one on the plane)!

Note on Ryanair Credit Card Fee When paying for a Ryanair flight with a credit card, Ryanair charges you 5€ for each journey, in each direction. This means that if paying for a return flight for a family of four, you will be charged eight times for the use of your credit card - that's 40€!

Ryanair's Checked Baggage & Hand Luggage Policy

Ryanair has the lowest checked baggage allowance in Europe. Your baggage allowance is as follows:
  • 15kg (33lbs) of checked baggage.
  • 10kg (22lbs) of hand luggage (one piece, only).
Ryanair do not allow laptops as a 'free' piece of hand luggage, as many other airlines do. It must fit into your one piece of hand luggage.

Ryanair also make no provisions for fragile items that you wish to carry onto the aircraft with you. Musical instruments and sporting equipment can be taken with you, but at a fee.

Punctuality & Reliability

Ryanair claim to have the best reliability record in Europe, with 89% of their flights coming in on time, citing a study by Ryanair, easyJet & Association of European Airlines statistics. According to an independent study by flightontime.com, Ryanair is the most punctual budget airline in the United Kingdom.

Can't argue with those figures, can you? Well, actually, you can. Look at how Ryanair achieved this record: Ryanair Punctuality

It is also not unheard of for Ryanair to move your flight time by a number of hours. I had a flight moved from 3pm to 10am, necessitating a hotel stay the night before to guarantee that I could get to the airport on time. To Ryanair's credit, they did offer me a refund, but with three weeks to go until my flight, how am I going to get another flight at the price I was looking for? Excellent for what you pay, Member janole

If booking ca 1 month before departure, tickets are frequently EUR 6-10 all inclusive of special fees or taxes that Ryanair may have invented. Airplanes are all brand new, and the airline has become Europe's biggest with 70 mill. annual passenger volume and also has major profits. So people obviously like Ryanair, despite all critics. For such low prices, obviously you don't get first class service with ""free"" meals and other perks of high cost airlines. The price of the tickets are less than a normal coach bus fare, so you should expect about the same service as on a normal coach bus as well. For the basic service of air travel, Ryanair does what they should do - they land on time and with no problems, so far for most of my flights. But I've only had about 100 flights with Ryanair, mostly from Stanstead and Frankfurt-Hahn. There was once a problem with an airplane, so we got a second airplane and had to wait 2 hours. This meant I had to pay double for my rental car, which was a pain for me and the only outright negative experience with Ryanair. The other negative experience was that it was snowing one day, and the airport closed - not really Ryanair's fault. FEES The only way to avoid card fee of EUR5 per passenger, is Mastercard prepaid. So get a 100% free Neteller card, or Wirecard (EUR1 instant issue) or Ecocard (EUR 0.40 per transaction), unlike Wizzair where you're forced to pay payment fees. Handluggage 10kg is free and sufficient for my needs for short airtravel in Europe. However, if you don't preprint your boardpass 4 hours to 14 days before departure, or you bring check-in luggage - you have to pay steep fees. They have several optional features like SMS and insurance while booking, so just be careful what you select while booking to avoid such extra costs. So far, I've not been tricked. If you make a wrong booking, like wrong date - your money is lost if you have already paid. SERVICE Don't expect to get paid for problems caused by Ryanair, like a rental car fee jump due to replaced airplane. Food in flight appears not so great, and cost a fortune like any airport food. There are no seat reservation, and I wouldn't bother with the priority boarding feature they offer - unless getting quickly into the plane for a special seat is important for you. You may have to listen to annoying commercials for some lotto tickets and similar stuff during the flight. On some flights, you may use your mobile - likely at high roaming costs. I arrived once after the gate was closed, and the gate called the airplane and they let me in. So this service, I was happy with. LOCATION They often select airports 100-200km away from the city you're going to. This means you often have to take a train or bus that cost more than the airplane tickets, which cost often below EUR10. CONCLUSION Ryanair has brought choice and competition to the airline industry - fantastic. Even if you do prefer paying extra for a more expensive airline, at least prices have also come down at major airlines due to competition from Ryanair. If you're willing to fly low budget, Ryanair seems great for the price. No ""free"" food included in the EUR10 ticket price for 1-2hr flights is also acceptable for some passengers.
