When the Bus is Better than the Train in Spain

By Damian Corrigan, About.com

Often, you'll find the bus to be better than the train when traveling in Spain. In particular, the routes on this page are poorly served by trains. You'd be much better taking the bus in these circumstances.

Popular Routes with No Train Service

  • Seville - Salamanca
  • Malaga - Granada
  • Cordoba - Granada
  • Cadiz - Ronda
  • Salamanca - Santiago
  • Segovia - Avila
  • Bilbao - Vitoria
  • Marbella - Anywhere! Marbella has no train station.
In addition to this, the west side of Spain, along the Portuguese border, is very poorly serviced by train (there are usually trains from Madrid to these places but few trains traveling north to south).

Popular Routes with Infrequent Train Services

Some of these services can get booked up weeks in advance in the summer.

  • Granada - Barcelona Two per day.
  • Granada - Madrid Two per day.
  • Vitoria - Logroño One per day

Popular Routes Where the Bus is Better than the Train

  • Bilbao - Barcelona It is a couple of hours quicker by bus and a lot cheaper.
  • Granada - Madrid Both journeys take six hours, but the bus is half the price. There are also far more buses than trains.
  • Valencia - Madrid The bus takes half an hour longer but is half the price.
  • Madrid - Bilbao The bus is cheaper and quicker.
