Barcelona, like all Spanish cities, is divided into 'barrios', or districts. Unfortunately, the exact way the city is broken down can be confusing, especially as many (perhaps the majority) of online guides get it wrong.

To keep things simple, I will start with Barcelona's barrios in a way that is useful from a tourist's point of view. I will then go on to explain exactly how they fit into the overall scheme of things.

Barcelona's Barrios - A Tourist's Perspective

The barrios of Barcelona that you'll be interested in as a tourist are as follows:

Barri Gotic | La Ribera | Las Ramblas | El Raval | Barceloneta | Montjuïc | Eixample | Tibidabo | Ciutadella

Where are El Born and Ciutat Vella? Read on.

Barcelona's Barrios - The Official City Demarcation

Barcelona's districts according to BCN.es and Spanish Wikipedia. Where appropriate, I've included the sub-divisions that you'll be interested in. There are dozens more sub-divisions than I've listed.
  • Ciutat Vella
Including: Barri Gotic, La Ribera, El Raval, Ciutadella and Barceloneta. Las Ramblas divides Barri Gotic from La Raval but isn't really in either district. La Ribera is more properly known as Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i La Ribera. El Born falls in this area.
  • Eixample
    Including: La Sagrada Familia
  • Gracia
  • Sants-Montjuïc
    Including: Montjuïc
  • Les Corts
  • Sarrià-Sant Gervasi
    Including: Tibidabo
  • Horta-Guinardó
  • Nou Barris
  • Sant Andreu
  • Sant Martí
