April Festivals in Spain - the Best Spanish Festivals in April

By Damian Corrigan, About.com

Best Region: Seville
Exact Dates: The week before Easter.
Why?: Semana Santa, of course, probably the most important festival on the Spanish calendar. The Easter festivities are big all over Spain, but the biggest spectacle is in Seville.

Semana Santa is mainly a series of processions, beginning with Palm Sunday the week before Easter, followed by those on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Easter Monday is less important in Spain then in the US or the UK).

Other Festivities in April:
  • Week before EasterSemana Santa completely dominates Spain in April, so no matter where you are, there'll be something to commemorate the Resurrection. Use this list of Semana Santa traditions to give you a flavor of what you may see on your travels. Toledo, in particular, is also a focal point for Semana Santa.

  • Third week - Granada Short Film Festival

  • April 23 - partying in Caceres, Extremadura.

  • April 23 - La diada de Sant Jordi, in Barcelona, a type of combined Valentines Day and celebration of the deaths of Cervantes and Shakespeare (who both died on the same day).
