- Virtually all ingredients locally produced
- Excellent ham
- Beautiful views of the mountains from the upstairs terraza
- Excellent wine (also locally produced) for 1 per glass
- Very obliging kitchen - happy to make dishes that aren't on the menu
- Poor selection of dishes. This is a ham restaurant - you need to be ordering ham!
- The food is quite greasy, although this is typical of all restaurants in the Alpujarras
- No vegetarian options - unless you can eat fish
- Expensive. I ate similar food in Pampaneira (a nearby village) for half the price.
- Meson del Jamón, Barrio Medio (just up from the main square), tel 958 85 86 79
- Locally produced ham and chorizo
- Panoramic views from their upstairs terraza
Meson del Jamón can be found in the hills five minutes walk up from the main square. Everything about it is reassuringly Spanish, with the obligatory hams hanging in the bar area. Go upstairs to sit out on the terraza, high above the town below.
I was never a fan of Spanish ham until I came to this region. To me it was always too waxy and tough. I changed my mind in Alpujarras. The meat has a consistency more like bacon than normal jamón ibérico and is much more palatable than you get in other parts of the country.
