Bodegas Casteñeda

The Bottom Line

For the ultimate Spanish experience, Bodegas Castañeda fits the bill perfectly. Whether you want to sample authentic tapas in Granada's unique style - that is, completely free of charge - or sit down to a full meal, this is the perfect place to come.

Pros

  • Free tapas!
  • Excellent selection of local wines and vermouth
  • Good service despite the large numbers of people

Cons

  • VERY busy - you'd be lucky to find a seat at ANY time of day (but you're free to stand)
  • Easily confused with Antigua Bodega Castañeda, just round the corner - they DON'T do free tapas!

Description

  • Almireceros, 1 - 18010 Granada, tel: (+34)95 822 32 22
  • Open daily 11:30am to 1am.
  • Closed for siesta from 4pm to 7pm
  • Free tapas, as well as a full menu
  • Excellent cheese and cold meats boards
  • Typical Spanish deco - cured ham hanging over the bar, barrels of wine & old b&w photos of Granada

Guide Review - Authentic Spanish restaurant in the heart of Granada

Locally produced jamón ibérico (Spanish ham), queso manchego (goats cheese), chorizo (spicy sausage) - the menu here reads like a glossary of Spanish food!

But the real appeal of Bodegas Castañeda is the abundant supply of free tapas. That's right, for under 2€ you can get a small beer or glass of wine with a free serving of paella, fried fish, vegetable stew or whatever else happens to be cooking in the kitchen at that time.

It's unbelievable how most tourists pass by Bodegas Castañeda without popping in. It is about as central as can be in Granada, yet still it seems that only Spanish people eat and drink there. Maybe people get intimidated by the hustle and bustle inside - it does get incredibly busy.

So take a deep breath, fight your way to the bar (it's easier to get served there) and enjoy Spanish food exactly as it was intended!

No free tapas, Member Oram123

This place is renown for free tapas but guess what, you don't get any if you don't drink coke or an alcoholic beverage. I dealt with the rudest bar tender in Spain today because my pregnant wife ordered a mineral water (agua con gas) and she didn't get a tapa. We were told at our hotel that this is the best tapas place and that they would give us free tapas even if my wife ordered mineral water, which along with bottled water is the only thing she is drinking in restaurants. I don't recommend the salty and old paella I got with my beer. I'd say, if you are curious about tapas, please reconsider this business as they were extremely rude to my wife and I and quickly brought our tapas venture to an end. The waiter declined to give me his name as I wanted to bring a complaint to his boss.
