Just a week after Las Fallas, my favourite festival in Spain, comes Semana Santa, probably Spain's most famous event.
Semana Santa (literally 'Holy Week' but more likely to be called 'Easter' in the English speaking world) is a big deal in Spain. If you're planning to visit this year, you're probably a bit late for getting accommodation in any of the big Semana Santa cities. But if you're going to be in Madrid, you're in luck, as Toledo is a short train ride away. Toledo has one of the most solemn Semana Santa experiences and is worth a visit if you're looking for a classic Spanish Easter experience. And if you want to avoid Semana Santa, Madrid is good too, as the celebrations don't really hit the capital like they do in other parts of the country. Read more about how to get from Madrid to Toledo or see my 100 Things to Do in Madrid (you'll notice Semana Santa isn't one of them!).
