Madrid or Barcelona for Christmas?

By December 6, 2012

If you're planning a city break to Spain for Christmas (or close to Christmas), which should you choose out of Madrid and Barcelona?

I've covered the pros and cons of Madrid and Barcelona before on this site. You can see my opinion on which city to visit here: Madrid or Barcelona: Which is Better?

Do you have anything different to consider when planning a trip over Christmas? Yes, you do.

While Madrid narrowly beats Barcelona for me in general, Barcelona is the clear winner for me over the Christmas period, for the following reasons:

  • Barcelona has more going on. Madrid shuts down a little more than Barcelona does. See more: December Events in Spain
  • Barcelona has some unusual Christmas traditions that you won't see in Madrid. See: Strange Christmas Traditions in Spain
  • Barcelona tends to be slightly warmer. Read more about Weather in Spain.
  • By being more touristy, Barcelona will have more bars and restaurants open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

But both destinations are excellent places to go at Christmas time.

Madrid is a great place. You can get food from all over spain here. The nightlife, museums, tapas and pinchos, and people make this the best place.
