Did you catch the start of the new season of Doctor Who at the weekend? Did you spot the scene they shot in Spain?
It has been widely reported that the British sci-fi series has an episode shot here that will air later this year, a Wild West-themed episode that was filmed in Almeria in the south of Spain. But when the producers of the show discovered that there were snow-capped mountains not far away in the Sierra Nevada mountain range near Granada, they decided to film the wintery scenes that we saw this week.
The makers of Doctor Who were no more surprised about the variety of Spain's landscape than a lot of visitors to Spain, who associate Spain with hot weather and beaches and not cold mountain regions. But it is indeed true that the BBC was able to film scenes in Europe's only desert (in Almeria) and then 50 miles away near Europe's most southerly ski resort.
