Barcelona is one of the best cities in the world for architecture, according to a new list on the Travel Channel website: World's Top Architecture Cities.
The rationale behind their choice is due to one man: Antoni Gaudi. The designer of La Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell is without doubt Barcelona's most famous architect, but there is a lot more to Barcelona architecture than this man. He was just one designer in the modernist movement. Other famous names in the modernist period include Lluís Domčnech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch. All three of these architects have buildings in the Illa de la Discordia or 'Block of Discord' in the Eixample district.
But Barcelona's architectural audacity didn't end with the modernists. Barcelona's cosmopolitan outlook has always encouraged the city's designers to push back the boundaries.
