Spanish Airport Strike Dates

By March 9, 2011

Follow me on:

Update: The strike mentioned in this post has been called off. Read more: Spain Airport Strikes Canceled Furthermore, the strikes threatened for August 2011 have also been called off: Spanish airport workers call off August strikes

They're at it again - staff at Spanish airports are unhappy about this and that, and if they don't get their way, our Spain travel plans will be disrupted.

There has been tension in Spain's air industry for some time. Threats of strikes are frequent, but they are usually called off, with some sort of temporary agreement usually found.

But this time it seems the gloves are really off, with a massive 22 days of strike action mooted.

Update: The strike mentioned in this post has been called off. Read more: Spain Airport Strikes Canceled Furthermore, the strikes threatened for August 2011 have also been called off: Spanish airport workers call off August strikes

The Spanish airport strike dates are:

  • April 20, 21, 24, 25 and 30, 2011
  • May 2, 14, 15, 19 and 20, 2011
  • June 13, 23 and 30, 2011
  • July 1, 2, 3, 4, 15 and 31, 2011
  • August 1, 15 and 31, 2011

Update: The strike mentioned in this post has been called off. Read more: Spain Airport Strikes Canceled Furthermore, the strikes threatened for August 2011 have also been called off: Spanish airport workers call off August strikes

The dates are fairly concentrated within each month, so it could be possible to fit your Spain travel plans around these dates. Alternatively, consider taking the train, bus or ferry from one of Spain's neighboring countries.

Update

In answer to the questions being raised in the comments below:

  • This strike is not yet definite. Negotiations are underway and the strike could be called off at any time. Even if the first strike date goes ahead, this does not mean that all strikes will go ahead.
  • As this is a national Spanish airport problem, this will affect the Canary and Balearic Islands too, but not Portugal or Gibraltar.
  • This strike is by airport workers, not air traffic control staff. So it will not affect flights from Portugal, Gibraltar or Morocco, even if they fly over Spanish airspace.
  • In the days following the strike dates, it is quite possible that there will be a backlog of passengers trying to depart.

(1) Justin Smith says:

Spanish air traffic controllers are not currently involved in the proposed strike action. It is the state run employees of Aena who are worried about privatisation plans.

(10) Anandale says:

I’m wondering if you know, from past incidents, what this means as far as air travel. The additional links are just for travel inbound to Spain. Would all flights in and out be affected? In other words, baggage handlers, and all the people who make an airport function, such that no flights would take off from Spain airports?

Gibraltar is run by the RAF and not AENA; if ATC do go on strike, then yes it could well be a problem

(13) gospain says:

I’ve clarified where will be affected, in answer to these questions.

Actually, Adrian, NATS runs Gibraltar airport, not the RAF. They got the contract about five years ago. But your point still stands – it is British-run, so won’t be affected.

I was scheduled to fly into Madrid on April 21, then fly Madrid to Palma April 24. Since both those dates are listed as potential strike dates, I have changed dates, and am now due to fly Boston to Madrid, leaving Boston on April 21, and arriving April 22. Will Madrid airport be open and operating on April 22? I also am planning to fly Madrid to Palma on April 22? That date is apparently not a strike date. Will it be safe to book that date?
