Madrid in Summer (From the Spain Travel Forum)
My response was that, compared to other times of year, yes, Madrid is very quiet. And it is indeed extremely hot. But plenty of people do spend their summer in Madrid's intense heat and live to tell the tale. Read my response in full: Spanish in Madrid during summer?

Yes, it is really hot in summer, temperatures well above 30dg, and yes, August is the month most “Madrileņos” take for a holiday, but not that much as they used to. Of course, you won’t find the hustle & bustle of the rest of the year, but there will still be people around, and tourists. It’ll be much nicer when visiting museums and other places. All public places have air-conditioning so as long as one doesn’t try to “go for a stroll” in the middle of the day, one can truly cope with it. Make sure to have a swimming-pool nearby ;O)
My sister and I were in Madrid in September and although hot it was fantastic. We are from South Africa so perhaps more used to warm weather.
All the museums have aircon and if you are interested in art and history, Madrid is the most beautiful city. Not as crowded as Barcelona and more regal.
Damians advice was spot on.
Good luck and I wish it was me.
