Unusual Nativity Scenes in Spain

Monday December 15, 2008
The Spanish love their nativity scenes. Known as 'Belenes' (Spanish for Bethlehem), they spring up all over Spain in December (and in August too in one small village in Granada). I've seen long lines form outside a Belen, as families take the kids and the grandparents to see what local craftsmen have created.

This year there are a couple of Belenes that warrant special attention. One is a beach nativity scene on Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas. Made entirely of sand (270 tonnes of it!), it cost €130,000 to build.

If you can't make it to the Canary Islands this winter, check out this underwater nativity scene in Madrid Aquarium at Madrid zoo. Thirteen sharks now share their tank with baby Jesus, Mary and seven other figures!

And if you're in Barcelona (or elsewhere in Catalonia), be sure to look out for the 'caganer' in the local nativity scenes. He'll be the little guy, erm, 'answering a call of nature'. Though banned from Catalonia's official nativity scene, less prudish locals still sneak him into private displays. Read more about Barcelona Christmas Traditions.
