The Spanish and Christmas Spending

Wednesday November 19, 2008
The Spanish spend more on Christmas than any other country in Europe after Great Britain and Ireland, according to a study by Deloitte.

This is despite the big drop in spending that is expected this year.

A Spanish family is likely to spend an average of 910€ this year on Christmas, down 43% on last year.

This may come as a surprise to those who don't normally associate Christmas with Mediterranean countries. Tourists tend to favor the Christmas markets of central and eastern Europe when looking for an extravagant festive season.

Unsurprisingly, it is food and gifts that the Spanish spend most money on. Considering Spain's famous love of food (and their tendency to indulge their children), it should really come as no surprise that the Spanish spend so much on Christmas.

If you still haven't settled on where to go this holiday season, consider spending Christmas in Spain.

You’ve only got to see the number of ads on TV between late afternoon and mid-evening to see why so much is spent on Christmas. Those cheap looking plastic toy sets, dolls, and games aren’t in fact very cheap when you go into a toy store to buy them.

I live in Spain and yes, Spaniards love good food at Christmas! Suckling pig, grilled prawns in various sauces, various meats, caviar and cava are just some of the delights they enjoy around here. They also buy lots of chocolates and foods like turrón (nougat), panettone and sweets known as mantecadas, for gifts.
However, the Spaniards don’t get Christmassy until right near Christmas. I haven’t seen a single Christmas decoration yet here in Almeria, no lights, santas or cribs just yet.
Feliz Navidad!
