Iron Maiden Mascot Appears in Spanish Council Meeting

Sunday October 19, 2008
It has emerged that Eddie the Head, the famous skeletal character who appears on the album covers of heavy metal band Iron Maiden, has been cropping up in council meetings in the the town of Villava in Navarra.

The bizarre act is a reaction by the Socialists against the insistence of Basque separatists to put their regional flag on their desks during meetings. "If I have to put up with their flag, they'll have to put up with Eddie's face," said José Luis Uriz, the Socialist leader, according to The Telegraph newspaper.

Though Navarra isn't in the Basque Country in the political sense (that is, it is not in the autonomous community of the Basque Country), the inhabitants of Navarra call themselves Basques and many would like independence from the rest of Spain.

What do you think of the councilors' protest? Is it childish? Or is it no different from the Basques' own immature tribalism? Leave your comments below.
