Contador Wins Vuelta a Espaņa

Sunday September 21, 2008
The Spanish domination of world cycling has continued, with Alberto Contador winning the Vuelta a Espaņa ahead of American Levi Leipheimer.

Contador also won the 2007 Tour de France and this year's Giro d'Italia, making him one of only five cyclists to win all three races in the Grand Tour.

Another Spaniard, Carlos Sastre, won this year's Tour de France.

If Leipheimer can't dethrone the Spaniards, all eyes will now turn to another American, Lance Armstrong, who will return to action at next year's Tour de France, after an absence of three years. Armstrong will be hoping to break Spain's stranglehold on the sport, having previously broken the record for most Tour de France wins, the old holder being another Spaniard, Miguel Indurain. Expect the face of the American to reappear on Spanish dartboards in nine months' time.

In other Spanish sporting news (in fact, more Spain v America news!), Rafa Nadal has thrashed Andy Roddick to take Spain into the Davis Cup final.
