An Artificial Beach in Barcelona

Thursday August 28, 2008
If, like me, you're not a fan of Barceloneta Beach in Barcelona, you may like to know that this summer there is an artificial beach right in the center of the city.

According to Absolut BCN, an Spanish-language blog about Barcelona, the beach is situated in the middle of an apartment block in the Eixample district. The beach has sand, changing rooms and showers and costs just 1.40€ to get in. You can find it at c/Roger de Llúria 56, between the streets of Diagonal, Gran Via de los Cortes Catalanes and Passeig de Gracia, which makes it a little more accessible than Barcelona's 'real' beach.

What's wrong with Barceloneta beach? Well, in addition to the fact that the sand is an artificial mix of the real stuff and concrete, the shops and restaurants around it are largely overpriced and sub-standard and it's a bit of a trek from the main touristy area.

But if neither of these appeals and you want a real beach not far from Barcelona, try Sitges, a town that can be easily reached from Barcelona by public transport.

Hola Damian!

I spent a month in Salamanca last year for a Spanish summer course. You’re so blessed to be staying in this beautiful city. I envy you ;)

I really miss walking by the Plaza Mayor everyday to class and getting my home supplies from Eroski!
