And no Russian cities…weird. I think St. Petersburg could hold its own against, well, Gdynia. And…why not some other Polish city, like Krakow, or Poznan, the birthplace of Polish Catholicism?
I guess there aren’t any major cities in Latin America. And only one in Africa… what’s that tune? “It’s a pale world after all?”
It should be pointed out that these cities were chosen by a public vote. I guess the Canadians were especially trigger happy with their vote button! I don’t know how popular Monopoly is in Latin America and Africa – perhaps that might explain these continents’ lack of representation?
I can’t believe that a major Southwest US city was not chosen. We do have some… really!
I wasn’t going to buy it anyway but there should have been only one city from each country to give more representation.
I agree with you Nancy, St Petersburg should definitely be in place of Gdynia – i really cannot see that the public voted for that city!
Actually, yes, I had heard about Gdynia before this vote … and am not too surprised to see such an “exotic” city coming up among the winners. After all, Gdynia is a sort of national treasure, a highlight of the resurgent Poland of the 1920s.
And … the Gdynia city fathers cleverly managed to kick off a viral marketing campaign that must have led to every Pole in the world (maybe excluding North and South Pole
) to vote for Gdynia. Obviously the same happened in Canada.
These public votes are always open for weird outcomes – remember the BBC’s search for the best song ever? Topped by Irish rebel combo “Wolfe Tones” with “A Nation Once Again”? Close runners-up being some Tamil Tigers bursting into song between firefights …
If you do not know anything about Gdynia you surely do now. Gdynia is a nice city though…
Extremely surprised there’s no Indian City (with two from China)
At least Bombay or New Delhi….
Hopefully the author of this text will now know how to spell Gdynia and perhaps also find out a bit more about it. I think that’s the whole point of edition of the game – people discovering cities around the world that they haven’t known before. Incidentally, there were other cities in Poland which competed against Gdynia, for instance Szczecin and Wroclaw. If you haven’t heard of them now’s your chance to find out more.
Oops, thanks Brasidas! I’ve corrected it now.
Of course I’d heard of Gdynia – I was just trying to get comments. It worked!
The cities on this Monopoly board were chosen by a popular vote. It seems the Poles are particularly interested in people finding out about one of their lesser known cities, whereas other countries went for their biggest and ‘best’ cities.
Which would you have chosen, Brasidas? Szczecin, Wroclaw or Gdynia? Let us know!
Gdynia, Gdansk and Sopot, I love the Tri-City
I think the Tri-City is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Poland, as well as Krakow, Wroclaw, Warsaw. And Nancy, have you ever been in Poland?
I voted for Gdynia as I am a resident of same. However, I know that Szczecin pushed really hard. Well done to all the cities who made it. Hopefully, other cities from around the world will get a chance to be voted in when (if) this competition is repeated. All the best!
