Ryanair to Deny Boarding to Thousands of Passengers

From Monday thousands of Ryanair customers face the prospect of arriving at the airport and being turned away because of how they booked their flight, according to an article in The Telegraph.

Ryanair will cancel the tickets of any passengers who booked their flights through price comparison websites. They will only honor tickets bought directly through the Ryanair.com website. Though the airline will refund the fare, most travelers won't know their flight has been canceled until they arrive at the airport.

Consumer groups are outraged by the move, according to the article.

So why doesn't Ryanair want you to book through price comparison sites, when the company claims to have the cheapest air fares in Europe? The reason is that, if you have ever visited the eyesore that is Ryanair.com, you'll see that the company does a lot more than just sell flights. And it is these sales that Ryanair feel they are losing out on when people book through price comparison sites.

But while the average fare across all of Ryanair's routes may be the cheapest in Europe, their lowest prices (particularly to Spain) are not as low as other airlines'. Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to compare Ryanair's prices with other airlines, as they tend to fly to different airports. Compare Ryanair's routes with easyJet's on this page on Ryanair alternatives.
