If you're experiencing city overkill when visiting Barcelona, be sure to take a day trip out to the Montserrat Mountain, just an hour from the center of the city.

Home to a famous Benedictine monastery, with its Virgin of Montserrat statue, the Montserrat mountain offers the visitor spectacular views of the Catalan countryside, as well as one of Spain's most important Christian pilgrimages.

And as one of the most accessible day trips from Barcelona (read about how to get to Montserrat below), there's no excuse not to visit this fabulous jewel in the crown of Catalonia.
