Tenerife Forest Fires - Will Your Vacation Be Affected?

Wednesday August 1, 2007
Officials in Tenerife say that the recent forest fires that have hit the Canary Islands are now under control, but that doesn't mean the area is out of the danger yet.

The fires, which are known to have been deliberately started (though the motives aren't yet apparent), are the worst to have hit the islands in fifty years - and this is not an area unfamiliar with forest fires. The high temperatures that hit the islands (and mainland Spain, too) mean that wildfires frequently hit Tenerife and Gran Canaria, but not normally on the scale currently being experienced. 86,000 acres of land have been damaged by the flames.

Tourists with vacations booked in the Canary Islands in the coming weeks are advised to check with their hotel or tour company to check that everything is going ahead as normal.
