Spain in July

Monday July 2, 2007
They say that only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, but from my experiences in Spain, I'd add Germans, Scandinavians and North Americans to that group too. July and August is the peak season for tourism in Spain, with Europeans and north Americans flocking to Spain's beaches and historic sights. However, the Spanish know better than to spend all day in the intense heat. For this reason, you'll find that cities such as Madrid and Seville are deserted in summer - your only company is likely to be other tourists like yourselves (the situation is even worse in August).

But don't worry - if you have no choice but to come to Spain in summer, there's still plenty to do. And if you still haven't booked your vacation, it still isn't too late. Though it's usually a mistake to plan a holiday in Spain this late, due to the high cost of flights, this year the price war between the budget airlines (in particular easyJet and Ryanair) is so hot that there are still a number of bargains. Check out this regularly updated page on Current Deals on Cheap Flights to Spain. You're more likely to have problems finding a hotel, as these can get booked up in advance. Take a look at this page on Booking a Hotel in Spain (especially the link to Venere) to see what accommodation is available, before you book your flights.
