The Madrid Metro (the Spanish name for the subway or underground train) has expanded again after a number of years of renovation and new stations opening. In the two years since I last lived in Madrid, six of the twelve lines have had new stations. If you are traveling to Madrid soon, don't rely on the metro map in your guidebook - no matter how new the book is, the map will be out of date. Instead, either make sure you pick up a new copy of the map in any metro station, or download and print off this
2007 online map of the Madrid Metro. (You'll need
Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this file).
The Madrid Metro is by far the easiest and most efficient way of getting around Madrid. It is one of the largest metro systems in the world and with no parking issues when you travel by metro, has a lot of advantages over hiring a car. Really, if you have no plans to explore the countryside, hiring a car is a waste of money when you have the metro at your disposal.
Thanks to the Es Madrid, No Madriz blog for alerting me to the metro changes.
