Semana Santa... Just Days Away!

Wednesday March 28, 2007
Semana Santa is upon us - Spain's Easter celebrations last a week and are easily the biggest festival on the Peninsula. Churches up and down the country organize processions to the city cathedral in an extravagant celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Spain's Semana Santa began as a way of bringing the meaning of Easter to the people and it remains very much a people's celebration.

The most spectacular celebrations in Spain take place in Seville, while the region of Castilla y Leon sees Semana Santa at its most sombre.

If you don't have accommodation booked already, forget it, most hotels in Seville will already be booked up for next year, let alone this year. But if you have a car you should be able to make some day trips to some of the major Semana Santa cities (many of them are within driving distance of Madrid).
