Mild Fall Means Spanish Ski Season Starts Late
The mild fall we have had in Spain this year is likely to have a big impact on Spain's ski industry as resorts have had to push back the start of the season due to lack of snow, according to a report on Expatica.com.
Normally the early December holiday period is a popular time to go skiing in Spain. With Wednesday and Friday this week being national holidays, many Spaniards 'hacer puente' ('do the bridge') and take the day off in between, giving them five days off in a row (including the weekend). Many of these would normally go skiing in one of Spain's dozens of ski resorts, but with a lack of the white stuff at the moment, people are going to have to find another way of amusing themselves.
Speaking of white stuff, it was also announced this week that Spain has the second highest cocaine intake in Europe (after the UK). In 2005 Spanish authorities confiscated nearly 50 tonnes of the drug - probably enough to top up a couple of the snowless ski slopes!
