New Spanish Driving Penalties a Success

Monday August 21, 2006
The Spanish government has announced that deaths on Spanish roads are down 25% since the introduction of a new penalty point system in July.

Drivers are given 12 points and lose points for each infraction (six for drunk driving, three for talking on a cellphone, etc) and if their points fall below zero, they lose their license for six months.

There was an outcry when the system was first introduced as it was difficult to see how the rules would affect drivers with foreign licences - that issue appears to remain unresolved. Read more on Driving in Spain.
