Federico García Lorca - Seventy Years On...

Saturday August 19, 2006
When Spain woke up on Wednesday August 19, 1936, Spain's greatest modern day writer, Federico García Lorca, was dead. Murdered during the night by Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War, the world was robbed of a great talent.

Seventy years later and Lorca's legacy lives on as strong as ever. On Thursday evening I watched Romancero Gitano, a flamenco ballet interpretation of some of Lorca's most famous poems. A spectacular show with dazzling costumes and magnificent music, I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Granada soon (the show only runs until August 26).

Alternatively, read some of Lorca's poetry and plays, featured in my Top 10 Books Set in Spain.
